Mount Oldonyo Lengai

MOUNT OLDONYO LENGAI OVERVIEW

Mount Oldonyo Lengai climbing Tanzania offers travelers a unique volcanic adventure in northern Tanzania. The mountain rises to 2,960 meters (9,711 feet) and stands just south of Lake Natron within the Great Rift Valley.

Known locally as Ol Doinyo Lengai, the mountain holds cultural significance for the Maasai people. In the Maasai language, its name means “Mountain of God.” Because of its spiritual and geological importance, the volcano attracts both trekkers and scientists from around the world.

Unlike most volcanoes, Mount Oldonyo Lengai produces a rare type of lava called natrocarbonatite lava. This unusual lava is much cooler and more fluid than the common silicon-based lava found in most volcanoes. As a result, the lava flows quickly and behaves almost like water.

During eruptions, the lava appears black or brown during the day, often resembling oil or foam depending on its gas content. However, it transforms dramatically when exposed to moisture, turning white as it cools. At night, the lava can glow bright orange, creating a remarkable natural spectacle.
